Carols Cause

Mission Statement

The Laino Family Foundation is proud to sponsor Carol's Cause©. Carol was a beautiful, vibrant, talented woman who succumbed to the ravages of clear cell cancer, which attacked her reproductive system. She courageously fought this dreadful disease for two and one half years.

During her many stays at Winthrop University Hospital in Mineola, New York, Carol was so impressed not just by her own team of doctors but also by the many young ob/gyn residents who treated her with a great deal of respect and the utmost professionalism. She always referred to them as her angels. If these young doctors are to continue their education in gynecologic oncology it would require at least an additional three years of training, assuming they could qualify for a fellowship in that area of expertise. With many of them facing the repayment of large student loans, many are tempted to accept positions with six figure salaries with established medical practices.

Carol often remarked to her husband that she wished she could help them continue their education.  It was her belief that with more doctors in this field of study there would more more research leading to improved care; quality of life issues would be addressed; more women would be seen sooner and conceiveably, other families would not suffer the anguish that this disease elicits. Although reported cases of breast cancer are much higher than all gynecologic cancers combined, the mortality rate for gyn cancers is significantly higher.

After her passing, Carol's Cause© was founded to fulfill her wishes. The Laino Family Foundation will donate monies to those doctors who continue their training in gynecologic oncology.

The criteria for the award and the selection of the doctor to receive the annual Carol's Cause© award will be under the auspices of the Medical Review Committee of the Gynecologic Cancer Foundation and the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists and their Boards of Directors whose cooperation and support is greatly appreciated.
